Resume vs. Curriculum Vitae
As a copywriter, I’m often asked by friends or colleagues to help them craft their resume. One question that comes up occasionally is . . . What does the acronym 'CV' mean? In short, I usually tell them that a 'CV' is basically the same as a 'Resume' and often interchangeable. However, there are some distinguishable differences between the two depending on your specific goal as a candidate for hire.
A 'Resume' depicts a concise picture of an individual’s skill sets, while a 'CV' is more focused on overall career history. Knowing the distinctions in scope, purpose, and use cases of these documents can make all the difference to determine which candidates get shortlisted based on an employer's hiring requirements.
PURPOSE OF EACH DOCUMENT
CV stands for Curriculum Vitae, which is a Latin word indicating the 'course of life.' As the term states, a CV should have an in-depth overview of the complete academic and professional career of a candidate. CVs are mainly required when you call candidates for academic jobs, fellowships, research programs, etc.
On the other hand, Resume is a French word that means summary. So, it should concisely collect candidates’ qualifications, relevant experiences, professional accomplishments, and required skill sets when applying for a specific job. You can call for a resume for industry positions, i.e., employment in the public or private sectors.
In addition, I have a successful record of managing teams effectively with a demonstrated ability to mentor, motivate, develop, and inspire team members. I also have a demonstrated record of success in best-practice business analysis, cross-functional program management, operational excellence, & effective implementation leadership. As a top-notch, award-winning researcher with a detail-oriented approach in analyzing and interpreting technical, marketing, and/or historical documentation, I am ready to create effective and engaging content to help your team achieve its goals.

During my tenure in working for the companies above in marketing to both general and niche customer bases as well as diverse classes of trade, I held many titles (BUSINESS UNIT LEAD, DIRECTOR, MANAGER, etc.). However, I never really cared much for titles. I am what one might describe as a “Title Minimalist” or an “Anti-Titleist.” This is, admittedly, a definition of my own creation. You won’t find it in a dictionary. I literally created the definition. It means that I have little regard for titles. I evaluate a person by their work ethic, contributions, drive, and/or experience in a certain or general area.
THE DEFINITION OF "TITLE MINIMALIST" or "ANTI-TITLEIST"
Ti·tle Min·i·mal·ist or An·ti–Ti·tle·ist = a person who advocates simplicity in describing one’s work function or advocates very minor or moderate uses of identifying appellations signifying one’s status or function in work.

I've seen too many ego-driven individuals abuse their roles within companies due to whatever "TITLE" they either created for themselves or were granted at the time. They adopt a superior/inferior complex in relationship to their coworkers. I don't care what "TITLE" you have. I care about whether you have a good work ethic or not as well as how you treat your fellow colleagues at work regardless of their assigned roles within the same company. I've seen too many unqualified people promoted to positions that they never should have had because they were not ready for it. And I've seen too many qualified people passed over for promotion who were more deserving. I've witnessed a LACK OF LEADERSHIP from individuals that held so-called "SUPERIOR" titles and I've experienced TRUE LEADERSHIP from individuals who held so-called "INFERIOR" titles. I discuss this in more depth in another section of my website entitled "MY LEADERSHIP STYLE."
I hold the same views on "EDUCATION" as I do on "TITLES." Like titles, I don't really care what degree you have or from which university it was granted. I've seen too many diploma mills award degrees to "UNQUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS." And I've worked with MUCH MORE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS that had no formal higher education or a degree that could run circles around the individuals with degrees. A degree is only a piece of paper that states you passed a so-called standard that a group of other people set. From my experience, I see no need for a group of strangers from XYZ University to reaffirm one's intelligence level. I evaluate people by their work ethic, their ingenuity, and the manner in which they treat others.
I have three higher education degrees. So what? I hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Air Force. So What? None of these degrees or titles define me. In fact . . . "the more knowledge I gain, the more I realize just how much more I don't know." These same sentiments were uttered by two well-known historical figures:
“The more we know, the more we know we don’t know.” — Aristotle
“The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.” ― Albert Einstein
The true test of leadership is realizing and admitting what you don't know. But, it is also about how you treat others in that realization. Put your ego aside. How do you treat other people? How do your treat your fellow co-workers and colleagues? Do you help them and inspire them to be the best they can be? Do you put service above self? Or do you step all over people to get what you want for your own selfish purposes?
